Spotlight on Gavin Manders

Favourite Athlete: Roger Federer
Most Difficult Opponent: Michael Shabaz and Eugene Highfield
Most Memorable Performance:
My match against Eugene Highfield of the US Virgin Islands in El Salvador in 2009. It was a three-and-a-half hour match on red clay in 97 degree weather. If I would have lost that match, we (Bermuda) wouldn’t have been promoted to Group III. We had an epic 22-point game at 4-4 in the third set and it takes 24 points to win a set so we pretty much played a set in that game. I held my serve at game and went on to win 7-6 in the third set which got us promoted.
Your Biggest Thrill:
Being the first tennis player to win Athlete of the Year and having my family there at City Hall to see it was my biggest thrill
Biggest Disappointment:
It would have to be my loss to Andy Bray at the Coral Beach Invitational at the end of 2008. I had beaten him in the last two tournaments and soldified my number one ranking in Bermuda. Then I played him on clay courts which should suit me more. It was my first time playing the Coral Beach Invitational and I lost to him in three sets.
