Several new faces in cricket squad
Posted: 2010-08-26
Bermuda’s team for next month’s Canada Summer Festival itri-series contains only a few of the players who represented the country recently against the Univted Arab Emirates.
England-based captain David Hemp again leads the side in the series against the hosts and a West Indies High Performance side, but his vice captain Stephen Outerbridge is one of the several players not making the trip for a variety of reasons.
Dion Stovell of Southampton Rangers returns to the national setup after a long, self-imposed absence while allrounder Delyone Borden has also earned a recall to the Bermuda team after he has again made himself available for the first time since David Moore took over as coach. Malachi Jones, too, comes back after a recent ban imposed by coach Moore because of his decision not to play for his club team during the recent ICC Division One Tournament at the National Stadium.
Jason Anderson of PHC gets a call and will likely share the wicketkeeping duties with Chris Foggo while bowler Kavon Fubler and opening batsmen Terryn Fray also gets opportunities in a squad that will be missing the likes of Janeiro Tucker, Irving Romaine, Justin Pitcher and OJ Pitcher. Seamer Kyle Hodsoll and spinner Tamauri Tucker both return to the national squad, Tucker one of four off-spinners named. National Coach Moore says it is an opportunity for players to impress at the international level.
“Injuries have precluded Stephen Outerbridge, Justin Pitcher, Stefan Kelly and Janeiro Tucker from selection,” said the coach.
“Irving Romaine, Dwayne Leverock and Staphen Dill are unavailable due to work commitments while OJ Pitcher has not been considered due to educational commitments in the US. The coaching and medical staff made the decision to rest young fast bowler Jordan DeSilva as a preventative measure as he has had an extremely high workload throughout the season.”
Added Moore: “The players selected for this tour have a wonderful opportunity to exhibit their skills on the international stage. Players such as Dion Stovell and Jason Anderson have been the in-form players of the domestic league and deserve an opportunity to press for further international selection. Kavon Fubler’s performance at domestic level as well as in Barbados with the U19 team has given him an opportunity to impress at the senior level. We are also pleased to welcome back Delyone Borden at international level. Although I believe that Delyone hasn’t had the season he would wish for it is clearly evident that he is a quality player and will be an asset to the team on this tour and hopefully in the future.
“In addition, it is extremely gratifying to welcome back Malachi Jones after his exclusion during the Americas tournament. Malachi is an exceptionally talented player and I would be disappointed for him and Bermuda if he did not take this chance he has been given to show everyone what a high quality cricketer he is.”
