Cardinals 3 Swallows 2
Both teams played with great sportsmanship as they spread the ball quickly up and down the pitch with Swallows settling into their game much quicker than Cardinals. In addition to juniors Adrien Lewis and Sheneve Campbell who have been playing for a few years, Cardinals were delighted to include two additional juniors: Lindsay Matthew and Alyah Williams on their squad who showed tremendous promise on their debut in field hockey.
A foul in the circle from a Swallows pass hit a Cardinals’ leg directly in front of the goal which resulted in Swallows being awarded a penalty stroke in the 38th minute that was converted by Kelli Nusum to give Swallows an early 1-0 lead.
Swallows continued their attacks on the breakaways but were thwarted by Holly Augustus’ great ‘keeping’ and Cardinals’ awesome defending. Cardinals kicked into high gear in the second half and after a broken down penalty corner shot at goal by Cardinals’ Amori Venter which hit one of Swallows defender’s foot after deflecting off the goalkeeper resulted in a penalty stroke being awarded. The penalty stroke was well executed by Helen Marshall in the 43rd minute to level the score at 1-1.
With Cardinals more energized as they continued to apply the pressure, it was Venter who dribbled the ball down the right side line towards the goal and a well-directed pass into the circle in the 53rd minute found the stick of Katie Flath on the penalty spot to pop the ball into the goal to advance the score to 2-1. Another field goal was scored as Candy Foggo was seen dribbling the ball down the right to the corner and a cross into Swallows’ circle to find an unopposed Flath at the top of the ‘D’ in the 62nd minute who powered home her second shot into the left corner of the post and now it was 3-1. Swallows were awarded a penalty corner and Mallory Towlson struck the ball home at goal from the top of the ‘D’ just seconds before the final whistle in the 70th minute to make the score 3-2 as Cardinals managed to run out the final seconds to win the game. With that win, Cardinals move on to the Knockout semi-finals to play Canaries on Saturday, April 30th at 10.45 am.
Ravens 2 Canaries 2
(Canaries advance after a Penalty stroke shootout 2-1)
Canaries took the lead in the 13th minute from a field goal by Lauren Farris, but 10 minutes later Ravens’ Katie Masters found the equalizer from a field goal. Ravens’ Tracy Stewart scored in the 34th minute from a field goal to give the Ravens a 2-1 lead at the half.
Canaries’ Angie Maria Alvarez made it 2-2 in the 65th minute from a field goal. With the score tied at the end of regulation time the game went into a 10-minute golden goal overtime. Despite great efforts by both teams, neither side was able to score a goal resulting in the match being decided by a penalty stroke shootout. The Canaries won the shootout 2-1 with incredible saves from Tami Ray.
Women’s A League:
Swallows 4 Swifts 0
Swallows were the aggressors in the early stages of the match and scored their first goal in the 25th minute on a field goal by junior Kayla Kellman. Swallows doubled their lead three minutes later on a field goal by National Junior Athlete Sponsorship winner Jennifer Chisnall.
The second half continued the same way as the first half, and a minute into the half saw Swallows’ Chisnall score her second field goal to make it 3-0. Elizabeth Stewart rounded out the win for Swallows in the 65th minute from a penalty corner shot to seal a comfortable 4-0 win for Swallows who advance to the semi-finals to face the Wildcats on Saturday, April 30th at 5.45 pm.
Budgies 5 Canaries A 1
Budgies put early pressure on Canaries and kept it up for most of the game. After many penalty corners, Budgies’ Keishae Robinson took the lead in the 17th minute from a shot at goal, however two minutes later the score was level as Budgies’ defence did not mark effectively and Canaries’ Georgi Drover scored a field goal to make it 1–1. There was a push up the field by the Budgies team which led to Erica Furtado giving them the lead again in the 26th minute from a field goal. Budgies kept on the attack and a penalty stroke was awarded to them in the 53rd minute from a shot that was blocked by a Canaries player’s body and Marcia Ford converted her shot making the score 3-1. Budgies’ Jasalle Smith scored a field goal in the 62nd minute from the left hand post, something she has been consistently practicing this season, to make it 4–1. Budgies’ defence did well to keep the ball out of the danger zone, with ‘keeper’ Candace Desilva coming to the edge of the ‘D’ to prevent further execution of goals by Canaries. Robinson closed out the scoring for Budgies with a field goal in the 64th minute to make it 5-1 to Budgies.
Budgies will meet Ravens in the semi-finals on Saturday, April 30th at 4 pm.
