Dudley Eve final
North Village 4 Dev. Cougars 4 (aet)
(North Village won 4-1 on penalties)
North Village retained their Dudley Eve title, but they had to do it the hard way, coming from behind four times at Wellington Oval before winning a dramatic penalty shootout.
The two teams produced six goals between them when they met in a league encounter two weeks ago, but this contest looked like being settled by Tumani Steede’s goal in the 42nd minute for Cougars when he converted a Domico Coddington cross. Dramatically, the Rams produced two equalisers in the dying minutes as the match went into extra time deadlocked at 2-2.
The first Cougars equaliser came in the 85th minute when substitute Keishen Bean supplied the cross from the right and captain Sammy DeGraff scored with a low shot that went in off the inside of the far post.
Two more goals came in injury time as the match had a fantastic finish to the regulation period. First, Cougars reclaimed the lead through Coddington in the first minute of injury time, only to see the defending champions draw level with a Jason Lee header a minute later.
A deflected own goal by Taurean Manders gave Cougars the lead in the 12th minute of the first extra time period, but the joy was shortlived as Village made it 3-3 a minute later with a diving header from Keishen Bean after a long ball to the back post by DeGraff was knocked back into Bean’s path inside the box.
And the scoring did not stop there as the crowd was treated to two more goals in the second period of extra time. For the fourth time in the match Cougars went ahead, this time in the 114th minute when Lejuan Simmons drove home from close range for what Cougars thought would surely be the winner. However, Village still had another goal in them and it came three minutes from the end when Thomas Watson drove a low shot home through a crowded area to make it 4-4 and set up penalty kicks.
Finally, Village prevailed, as dejected Cougars missed two of their three penalties. DeGraffed scored for Village before Moses Steede replied for Cougars. Village scored again through Jason Lee but Chris Caisey’s kick hit the post with Jason Williams going the wrong way.
Kofi Dill put Village 3-1 up before Kor-Von Tucker had his effort saved by Williams. Victory was secured when Kaiwon Dill placed his kick past Ricardo Brangman in the Cougars goal.
